STAND COMMENDS PRESIDENT BOAKAI’S CALL FOR WAR CRIMES ACCOUNTABILITY AND URGES ACTION ON CORRUPTION

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – STAND, a civil and human rights advocacy group in Liberia, has welcomed the latest statement from President Joseph Nyuma Boakai regarding war crimes accountability. In a recent BBC interview, President Boakai asserted that those who bear the greatest responsibility for war crimes must account for their actions and admit their wrongs as a way of ending impunity and promoting reconciliation. STAND applauds President Boakai for his commitment to justice and reconciliation in Liberia.

STAND also expresses gratitude to US Congressman Chris Smith for his continued support to Liberia. Congressman Smith has reminded President Boakai of his campaign promises and inaugural speech, emphasizing the need for establishing a War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court. Congressman Smith believes that justice and accountability are essential for the people of Liberia.

While STAND acknowledges President Boakai’s encouraging words regarding the establishment of a War Crimes Court, the organization is deeply concerned about the increasing reports of corruption, bribery, and ineptitude within the government. STAND urges President Boakai to take immediate action by ordering an independent investigation into these acts of corruption. It is crucial for President Boakai to uphold his campaign promises and make corruption a thing of the past.

Furthermore, STAND strongly requests that President Boakai issue an executive order to create an office for War Crimes, similar to the establishment of an Asset Recovery Program. Additionally, STAND urges President Boakai to write a letter to the United Nations Secretary General, seeking international assistance in establishing the War Crimes Court.

STAND reminds the Boakai administration that failure to address these concerns promptly and effectively may lead to mass public unrest and civil disobedience. Urgency and commitment to implementation are vital in ensuring justice, accountability, and lasting peace for the people of Liberia.
