STUDENT FILES $300K LAWSUIT AGAINST J.J. ROBERTS OVER ALLEGED EYE INJURY

MONROVIA – A senior student of J.J. Roberts United Methodist School has filed a $300,000 lawsuit at the Civil Law Court in Monrovia, alleging serious bodily harm caused by the institution’s Dean of Student Affairs, Dolo Mulbah.

The student, identified as Richard Gbai, is pursuing an action of damage for wrong, comprising twenty-one counts. According to court documents, Gbai claims that during a heated student election campaign in December 2024, Dean Mulbah struck him in the left eye with a wooden stick on the school campus, allegedly following a verbal altercation between Gbai and a female student.

The incident, which Gbai says led to severe injury and partial vision loss, was reported to the Liberia National Police. However, Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman allegedly halted further investigation into the matter and later offered L$50,000 to Gbai’s parents, despite the case remaining unresolved.

Gbai told reporters that although he underwent surgery to repair the damage, he still suffers from blurred and distorted vision. He described visual difficulties, including disappearing lines and image distortion, that have continued to affect his daily life.

The Civil Law Court has now issued a writ of summons for Dean Mulbah, the school’s principal, Samuel Sagbeh, and the Board of Trustees to appear before the court no later than May 31, 2025. Their appearance will determine the course of litigation during the upcoming June Term of Court.
