SUP LISTS 11 REASONS DEMANDING UL PRESIDENT DR. LAYLI MAPARYAN’S RESIGNATION

MONROVIA – The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has intensified its call for the immediate resignation of University of Liberia (UL) President Dr. Layli Maparyan, citing what it describes as failed leadership and a series of unaddressed issues affecting students, faculty, and staff.

On Monday, September 2, 2025, SUP issued a statement outlining eleven reasons for its demand, including the alleged failure to resolve long-standing Add and Drop registration issues, lack of transportation on the Fendall campus throughout the semester, and the treatment of Vacation School as equivalent to a full semester.

The student group also accused Dr. Maparyan of unlawfully dismissing staff members, failing to meet her promised 100-day deliverables, and allowing inequities in compensation where secretaries reportedly earn more than professors. SUP further criticized the appointment of Lester Tenny to oversee fiscal affairs, labeling him “corrupt and arrogant.”

The statement highlighted what the party described as Dr. Maparyan’s inability to raise funds for the university while drawing a monthly salary of US$15,063.09 plus benefits, suggesting she takes more from the institution than she contributes. The party also questioned her collaboration with what it called an illegitimate Board of Trustees, claiming the current chairman is occupying the position unlawfully.

Other grievances included the alleged improper integration of former USAID employees into the university and the administration’s use of social media to project a positive image despite ongoing institutional challenges. “Her leadership has been a disaster and a disappointment to students, faculty, staff, and the Liberian people,” SUP said.

SUP vowed not to yield to intimidation and pledged to continue its campaign until Dr. Maparyan leaves her post.

In response, Dr. Maparyan rejected calls for her resignation, dismissing speculation that she might step down. She reaffirmed her commitment to transforming UL into a leading academic institution. “I have no intention to resign,” she stated, emphasizing her dedication to addressing the university’s challenges.

The dispute follows heightened tensions on campus. On Monday, September 1, riot police from the Liberia National Police’s Police Support Unit (PSU) clashed with protesting students at the Capitol Hill campus, resulting in damage to some university offices.
