SUP PLANS STUDENT PROTEST AT UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA AMID BAN ON CAMPUS POLITICS

MONROVIA – The Student Unification Party (SUP) announced that it will stage a peaceful protest on the Capitol Hill Campus of the University of Liberia (UL) on Monday, September 15, 2025, demanding urgent reforms to address issues affecting students and faculty.

In a statement issued Sunday, September 14, 2025, the SUP called on students, ideologues, and the general public to join the demonstration, emphasizing the need to defend social justice, academic freedom, and peace. “We condemn the Boakai administration’s attempts to sponsor thugs posing as a ‘student group’ to disrupt our action. Our protest is in line with Article 17 of the Liberian Constitution and international laws guaranteeing peaceful assembly. SUP invites the media, civil society, and the international community to observe,” the statement said.

The statement concluded with a firm declaration of commitment, saying: “The Vanguard Party remains committed to protecting the rights of students and masses of the people without giving in to any intimidation!”

The announcement comes amid the University of Liberia’s ongoing ban on student politics. The UL Board of Trustees, chaired by Grand Kru County Senator Numene Bartekwa, reaffirmed its 2024 decision to suspend all student political activities on Friday, September 12, 2025. The Board cited recent violent incidents on both the Capitol Hill and Fendall campuses, including clashes between students and security forces on September 1 and September 11, 2025.

In its statement, the UL Board directed the immediate suspension of students involved in the confrontations pending investigation and ordered the establishment of a Standing Disciplinary Committee to enforce regulations in accordance with the Student Handbook. The Board also called for the immediate resumption of classes and prioritized renovation of critical facilities, beginning with bathrooms, which it described as essential for a safe learning environment.

“The Board will not tolerate any form of violence or disruption that jeopardizes the academic and administrative activities of the University,” the statement emphasized.
