UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA STUDENTS URGE FACULTY TO RESUME CLASSES AMID ONGOING DISRUPTION

MONROVIA – The University of Liberia’s student leadership has issued a heartfelt appeal to faculty members to return to classrooms, highlighting the adverse impact of the ongoing academic disruption on students’ education and futures.

In a letter dated September 24, 2025, addressed to the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA), Abraham J. Garpehn, Vice President of the University of Liberia Student Interim Leadership (ULSIL), acknowledged the crucial role of lecturers, professors, and mentors in shaping Liberia’s future through education. “Your dedication, sacrifices, and tireless commitments to teaching, research, and service are the bedrock upon which the future of Liberia rests,” Garpehn wrote.

The students expressed understanding of the faculty’s grievances, emphasizing that their concerns are “legitimate” and that quality education depends on respecting the welfare and dignity of teaching staff. However, Garpehn stressed that the prolonged suspension of classes is taking a toll on students, leaving many facing “discouragement, uncertainty, and the loss of precious time that cannot be regained.” He warned that the disruption not only jeopardizes individual academic journeys but also poses risks to the broader future of Liberia.

The student leadership urged faculty members to reconsider their stance while negotiations with the university administration continue, advocating for constructive engagement that balances fairness, respect, and mutual understanding. “We ask you to once again demonstrate the spirit of sacrifice, mentorship, and patriotism for which you are known,” Garpehn wrote, appealing for the resumption of academic activities to protect the interests of thousands of young Liberians.

The letter concluded with a reminder of the University of Liberia’s enduring mission, describing it as “Lux in Tenebris,” the light in darkness, and expressing hope that the appeal would be received with the same dedication and concern that faculty have historically shown toward their students.

The ongoing dispute between the University of Liberia administration and faculty over working conditions continues to affect thousands of students, prompting calls from both the student body and other stakeholders for a swift resolution to restore normal academic operations.
