MONROVIA – Former President George Manneh Weah has declared a renewed mobilization of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), using a fiery address to call out the Unity Party-led government for what he described as growing failures, increasing poverty, and the erosion of democratic principles in Liberia.
Speaking on April 12, 2025, before a crowd of CDC partisans, officials, and sympathizers, Weah warned that the country is “paying the price” under President Joseph Boakai’s leadership, which he accused of governing through “false promises and deceptive slogans.” The former president said the CDC, which narrowly lost the 2023 presidential election by less than 20,000 votes, remains strong, united, and ready to reclaim national leadership.
“We have seen a government that rode to power on the back of false promises… while sinking the country deeper into poverty, fear, and hopelessness,” Weah said. “This government is failing. And Liberia is paying the price.”
Weah also pointed to what he described as “executive overreach,” “lawlessness in the Legislature,” and the violent abuse of peaceful citizens by state security forces. Despite these challenges, he maintained that the CDC stands as “the voice of the voiceless” and “the protectors of the poor.”
In a speech heavy with references to struggle and resilience, Weah invoked the legacy of Nelson Mandela and framed the CDC as a peaceful but determined political force preparing for a comeback. “We will not rest. We will not retreat. We will organize, mobilize, and energize until we reclaim what is rightfully ours — the leadership of Liberia,” he declared.
The former president used the occasion to officially launch the CDC’s due payment campaign, calling on members to invest in the party’s future. He described the dues not just as financial contributions but as symbols of loyalty and commitment.
Weah also extended a hand to former partisans who had left the party, urging them to return and “complete the task” of rebuilding the CDC ahead of the next election cycle.
“Wait well,” he told the crowd. “Liberia and Liberians will call on us again. Be prepared to win again and lead again.”
With chants of “Munya, CDC Munya!” echoing from the crowd, Weah closed his speech with renewed calls for unity, discipline, and a peaceful road back to power.
