WITHERSPOON AND FAHNGON EXCHANGE BARBS IN PUBLIC FEUD, DRAW PUBLIC REACTIONS

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA—A public feud has erupted between Stanton Witherspoon, former CEO of Spoon Network, and Eugene L. Fahngon, Director General of the Liberia Broadcasting Corporation (LBS). The heated exchange began with Witherspoon’s critical remarks during a live broadcast on Spoon Talk on Monday, January 13, 2025, and was met with a pointed response from Fahngon on social media.

In his broadcast, Witherspoon dismissed Fahngon as insignificant, saying, “They’re not my mate. I fed them, clothed them, paid their school fees, and even their rent. They’re like my children.” Witherspoon further referred to his critics as “cockroaches,” sparking backlash and intense public debate.

Fahngon fired back with a Facebook post that read, “STANTON; THEY’RE NOT YOUR MATES BECAUSE THEY DID NOT GO JAIL WITH YOU AND WILL NOT BE IN PRISON WITH YOU FOR THREE AND 1/2 YRS. YOUR CELL ‘MATES’ WAITING!!” The post quickly garnered over 1,600 comments and 116 shares, with mixed reactions from the public.

Among the reactions, some commenters supported Fahngon’s stance, while others criticized his approach. Mienwipia Buna Suah Marcus wrote, “The battle line has been drawn. Stanton doesn’t keep secrets like Eugene L. Fahngon, so we will see who will win this battle. Stanton has refused to acknowledge all the good things the government is doing, only the bad ones he elevates. But he claims to be a supporter of this government. Fahngon and others are under obligation to stand by what they brought to prominence.”

Others took issue with Fahngon’s tone, urging professionalism. Allison B. Allison commented, “Wow….I’m very much surprised by your response to Stanton’s claims. Eugene, you are admired by most people but coming this low will definitely damage your fan’s or support base. Stanton is a talk show host; he says things on the show to bring more listeners. You should have done a rebuttal and remained professional.”

Some remarks directly accused both figures of hypocrisy. John Kollie stated, “How is Eugene Fahngon any different from Stanton? It Is Stanton’s criminal proceeds that he fed on to get his latest job.”

Several commenters suggested that Fahngon should de-escalate the situation. Moses Johnson advised, “Honorable Eugene L. Fahngon, honestly, you need to take down this post. It doesn’t represent your good office. If you continue with this retort against Stanton, trust me, you’ll lose every bit of good morals in you.”

Youjay Debah added, “At times, it’s good to control your anger and value your friendship. You were once a buddy of Stanton A. Witherspoon when you were in opposition. Your statement shows that you are no different from Keff and the guys that left Stanton and said all the negative things about him. Elevate your game and stop going low.”

Others called for a complete avoidance of Witherspoon. Augustus Flomo BC remarked, “Avoid Stanton no matter what! Remember, when everyone left you and the world didn’t know you that much again, it’s Stanton through the show. Just avoid him!”

However, not all comments were conciliatory. Aladdin Kei-Tata bluntly alleged, “Eugene L. Fahngon, you ate some of Stanton’s criminal money.”

The feud between Witherspoon and Fahngon continues to generate public interest, with calls for both parties to maintain professionalism and rise above personal attacks.
