LIBERIA: OPPOSITION LEADER JOSEPH BOAKAI CONSOLIDATES LEAD IN PRESIDENTIAL RUN-OFF ELECTION

Date:

MONROVIA – Liberians are witnessing a fiercely fought presidential contest as two of Liberia’s political heavyweights are vying for the nation’s highest seat. On one side stands President George Weah, the popular former football star turned politician, known for his charismatic personality. On the other side is former Vice President Joseph Boakai, a seasoned politician with years of experience and a shrewd vision for the country’s future.

As the election progressed, it became clear that the race was neck and neck, causing tension and excitement to build across the nation. Supporters of both candidates tirelessly campaigned, hoping to influence voters and sway the outcome in their favor. The first round of the presidential election was between 21 candidates but because none of them could win the 50% plus one as required by the Liberian Constitution, it came down to the first two candidates Weah of the ruling CDC and Boakai of the opposition Unity Party.

The political landscape was buzzing with anticipation, and every decision made by the National Elections Commission (NEC) is under scrutiny for the runoff.

With the runoff held and preliminary results announced the NEC, Joseph Boakai of the main opposition Unity Party is consolidating his lead.

The announcement of NEC has sent shockwaves through the country and sparked intense debates about the direction of Liberia’s future.

With 86% of the votes reported, Boakai has garnered an impressive 712,741 votes, while Weah trails with 696,520 votes margin of 16,221, which is 1.16%.

In the last pronouncement from NEC, Boakai obtained 193,041 votes while Weah had received 187,615 votes.

Boakai’s gradual push to consolidate his lead has sent his supporters of the Unity Party celebrating in some quarters in Monrovia.

After the first round of polls, the former Vice President embarked on a strategic political campaign, rallying support from across the nation.

Boakai traveled tirelessly, attempting to address the concerns of the people, promising effective governance, and highlighting his experience as a steady hand in leading the country forward.

Liberians were captivated by his promises of unity, and his determination to address the pressing issues facing the nation-the bread and butter issues.

Boakai’s calm and composed demeanor seems to have resonated with the voters, who yearned for stability and a leader with a clear vision.

He now leads with 50.58% of the votes, while Weah, is holding 49.42% of the votes in this very close contest.

President Weah, now faced mounting pressure to regain his footing and reverse the tides.

He had embarked on a vigorous campaign trail, seeking to regain momentum and connect with voters on a deeper level.

Weah reminded the nation of his humble beginnings and his commitment to championing the cause of the common citizen. However, the political winds seemed to be blowing in favor of Joseph Boakai.

November 14, the day of the presidential runoff election arrived. Liberians lined up patiently at polling stations, eager to cast their votes and shape the future of their country.

The atmosphere was vibrant, with a palpable sense of excitement and hope for change.

As the votes were counted, the nation held its breath, waiting to hear the final results. When the NEC announced the outcome, it confirmed what many had anticipated. Joseph Boakai emerged as running away with 0ver 700,000 votes as 86% reported by NEC.

And so, the story of former Vice President Joseph Boakai’s gradual push for the presidency is gaining traction as Liberian awaits the next pronouncement from NEC.

A Joseph Boakai’s victory could be an integral part of the country’s political fabric, serving as a testament to the power of determination, experience, and a vision for the future.
