MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia (GOL) has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the ongoing protest and tension within some communities of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) concession area in Nimba County. These activities have resulted in disruptions to the company’s operations and the free movement of citizens.
In response, the Government has formed an inter-ministerial committee with a mandate to engage all parties involved to find an immediate solution to the situation. The committee comprises the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Justice, Mines and Energy, Labor, and the National Bureau of Concessions.
While affirming citizens’ legal right to protest, the Government emphasized the importance of investments that create jobs and provide livelihoods for the Liberian people. The Government also condemned the misuse of traditional and cultural institutions to intimidate citizens and foreign residents.
The Government highlighted the availability of legitimate channels to express grievances and urged all parties involved to pursue dialogue through established grievance channels to seek redress.
The GOL assured AML and all investors of its commitment to maintaining peace and security in their operational areas.
The statement was signed by Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, Minister.
