HOR DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY ON EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT, SUMMONS KEY OFFICIALS

Date:

MONROVIA – In a significant move towards ensuring government transparency and adherence to the rule of law, the Plenary of the House of Representatives has unanimously summoned top officials to provide detailed information regarding the procurement, bill of lading, and parking of earth moving equipment recently acquired by the government.

The officials summoned include Minister of State Hon. Sylvester M. Gribgsby, Minister of Defense Madam Geraldine George, Minister of State Without Portfolio Madam Mamaka Bility, and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) Brigadier General Davidson Fayiah Forleh. They are expected to appear before the full body of the House on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

This decision was spurred by a communication from Lofa County District #4 Representative Gizzie K. Kolliance. In his communication, Rep. Kolliance sought the indulgence of his colleagues to invite the officials to answer inquiries and provide comprehensive information about the procurement process.

Rep. Kolliance emphasized the crucial role of development, particularly in road construction, to the country’s growth. However, he underscored the need for these developments to occur within the legal framework. “Government must always take due cognizance of the established laws and processes appertaining thereto. The Liberian government has three coordinate branches of government, each with a distinct role granted by the constitution,” he stated.

The Lofa County lawmaker stressed the importance of preserving the constitution to ensure that no branch of government oversteps its boundaries. He stated that the Plenary must act to safeguard constitutional order and prevent any branch from illegally usurping the powers, duties, and responsibilities of another.

Following a thorough reading and debate on the matter, the House voted to invite the officials to provide detailed information regarding the procurement of the earth moving equipment. This move is seen as a commitment by the House to uphold transparency and accountability in government operations.

The House Press Bureau, in its statement, reiterated the importance of this inquiry, highlighting that the public deserves to know the details of significant government procurements, especially those related to national development projects. This step is aimed at ensuring that all actions taken by the government are within the confines of the law and contribute to the nation’s progress in a lawful and transparent manner.

As the summoned officials prepare to appear before the House, this development underscores the critical role of the legislative branch in overseeing and holding the executive accountable. It also reflects the broader commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that government actions are transparent and legally sound.
