MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has taken decisive action against the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) for charging an unauthorized “expedited connection service fee.” In a statement released on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the LERC announced that LEC’s practice of imposing a fee of US$150 for expedited connections is in violation of the regulations governing electricity service charges in Liberia.
According to the LERC, the fee, which was being collected from customers seeking faster electrical connections, was neither authorized by the Commission nor in line with the established service tariffs. The regulatory body has ordered an immediate cessation of the fee collection, demanding that LEC cease imposing the charge on its customers.
This move follows the LERC’s decision to launch an investigation into the legality of the expedited connection service fee. The inquiry will examine the grounds on which LEC has been charging customers for a service that was not previously approved by the Commission.
Atty. Kla-Edward Toomey II, Acting Chairman of the Board of Commissioners at the LERC, emphasized the Commission’s dedication to ensuring that utility services remain affordable and accessible for all Liberians. “Our primary focus is to protect consumers and maintain fairness and transparency in the services provided,” he said.
The Commission has also called for an urgent meeting with the leadership of LEC to discuss the matter further and to guarantee that LEC complies with the LERC’s directive. Additionally, the LERC has warned all utility providers to refrain from introducing unauthorized fees for services, stressing the importance of adhering to established regulations.
