UL SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS VOICE CONCERNS IN INTERACTIVE SESSION WITH DEAN GRAY

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Associate Professor Dr. Josephus M. Gray, Dean of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Liberia (UL), recently held an interactive session with the leadership of the Social Work Student Association, where students raised concerns about challenges affecting their academic experience.

The meeting, which took place last week at the Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer Faculty Lounge on the UL Fendall Campus, provided a platform for students to engage in a candid discussion about persistent issues within the Social Work Department and the broader university environment.

During the session, students highlighted several problems impeding their smooth learning process at the university. While details of the specific issues were not disclosed, the students reportedly presented multiple recommendations aimed at resolving these concerns.

Dr. Gray described the engagement as an “honor” and emphasized the importance of fostering open communication between faculty leadership and students. “It was truly an honor to interact with the students and share my thoughts,” he stated. He further promised to hold more such sessions to stay updated on student-related matters and find solutions to the challenges they face.

Despite the positive tone of the meeting, the recurring need for these discussions suggests ongoing dissatisfaction and unresolved issues within the Social Work Department. With the University of Liberia already facing public scrutiny over broader institutional concerns, such engagements highlight the growing demand for improved academic conditions and administrative responsiveness.

It remains unclear whether the university’s administration will take concrete actions based on the students’ recommendations. However, Dr. Gray’s commitment to continued dialogue signals a willingness to address concerns – a move many believe is long overdue in the face of mounting student grievances.
