APRM, GIZ LAUNCH THREE-DAY WORKSHOP TO STRENGTHEN LIBERIA’S COUNTRY SELF-ASSESSMENT PROCESS

MONROVIA – The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is set to host a three-day Technical Training Workshop on the Popularization of the APRM Revised Country Self-Assessment Questionnaire and Methodology from Wednesday, September 10 to Friday, September 12, 2025, at the Cape Hotel in Mamba Point, Monrovia.

The workshop aims to equip national research groups, think tanks, and key stakeholders with in-depth knowledge of the revised APRM research methodology, a critical tool for Liberia’s upcoming national survey and research process that will culminate in the preparation of the Country Self-Assessment Report (CSAR). The CSAR serves as the foundational document for Liberia’s second-generation country review, which evaluates governance, accountability, and socio-economic progress.

The training forms part of a broader series of activities outlined in Liberia’s APRM Review Roadmap. It reflects APRM’s continental strategy to strengthen governance, accountability, and peer learning among African Union (AU) member states. Established in 2003, the APRM is a specialized AU institution that promotes voluntary self-assessment by member states to encourage transparency and improve national performance.

The workshop will focus on popularizing the Revised Country Self-Assessment Base Questionnaire and its annexed toolkits, training national structures and technical institutions to domesticate the questionnaire, building capacity for the effective use of the APRM electronic questionnaire, and providing a platform for member states to share best practices. Experience-sharing sessions will include representatives from the APRM national structures of Ghana and Nigeria.

Participants are expected to include representatives from the National Governing Council (NGC), the APRM National Secretariat, research institutes, development partners, civil society organizations, independent think tanks, youth groups, the media, and key ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

The workshop underscores Liberia’s commitment to enhancing its governance review mechanisms, ensuring that national stakeholders are fully prepared to contribute to a robust and inclusive assessment process. By strengthening research capacity and promoting accountability, the APRM hopes to advance good governance and socio-economic development in Liberia.
