DISABLED CHILD, 13 CRAWLS ON HIS BELLY DUE TO LACK OF WHEELCHAIR

Date:

By Paul Kanneh

KAILAHUN, LOFA COUNTY – A 13 years old disabled kid, Forkpah Kamara has been crawling on his belly since birth. As Forkpah grows older, his parents are concerned that his weight won’t permit him to roaming around using his belly. Anthony L. Konneh and

Mamai Losay, both parents of the disabled child are worried about the challenges they would face with their child when he grows older and becomes heavier. “We can sense the shame and embarrassment from our son who crawls daily on his belly among his friends”, Mamai laments her child condition. “For me, if someone can help us with a wheelchair, it will give our son some integrity among his peers, father of the child pleads for assistance.

Although Forkpah is physically challenged, he has not allowed that to impede his movement as he remains active among the kids in Kailahun town, ensuring he takes part in “hide and see play” usually performed by growing-up kids in villages. But for how long will Forkpah continue crawling on his belly is a major concern to him and his poor parents. Little Forkpah and his parents are about 390 kilometers away from Monrovia.

Wheelchairs are sold between US$35-100 depending on the quality. But such an amount appears too big for Forkpah parents to afford. Even if they can afford, they can’t easily access one to purchase due to lack of transportation to get to Monrovia. Forkpah’s parents are, therefore, sending out an SOS call to philanthropists, government officials and medical grouping to help them with wheelchair. Photo courtesy: C Varney Lukambehpekin Kamara.
