KAKATA, MARGIBI COUNTY – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to the ideals of peace, justice, and multilateral cooperation as the nation joined the world in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. The colorful ceremony, held at the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata, Margibi County, brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and students.
Delivering the keynote address, President Boakai described the occasion as a moment of pride for Liberia, recalling the country’s distinguished role as one of the founding members of the United Nations in 1945. He said Liberia’s decision to sign the UN Charter in San Francisco was guided by a deep sense of duty to humanity and a commitment to a shared global vision.
“As a nation, Liberia has always been committed to the ideals of the United Nations, and we take great pride in our legacy of advancing peace, security, and human rights,” President Boakai said. “Since its inception, the UN has been a cornerstone of global cooperation.”
Speaking under the theme, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,” President Boakai emphasized that the United Nations continues to stand as a beacon of hope and cooperation for all peoples and nations. He reaffirmed Liberia’s support for the UN’s mission and pledged the country’s continued leadership in advancing global peace and solidarity.
The Liberian leader highlighted the significance of Liberia’s upcoming term on the United Nations Security Council in 2026, describing it as an opportunity for the nation to demonstrate its renewed global leadership and commitment to international peace and development. He noted that global challenges such as climate change, conflict, and humanitarian crises require collective action and reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to the principles of multilateralism.
“Liberia remains steadfast in its support for multilateralism and will continue to contribute to the efforts of the UN in achieving these goals,” the President asserted.
He called for stronger partnerships between the UN, regional organizations such as the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and national governments. According to him, these alliances are vital for addressing complex global challenges and building sustainable and equitable societies for future generations.
President Boakai acknowledged that while progress has been made, much remains to be done to uphold the UN Charter’s principles of peaceful coexistence, human dignity, and social progress. He emphasized that Liberia’s engagement with the UN has not only strengthened its foreign policy but also shaped domestic priorities in areas such as education, healthcare, economic growth, and climate action.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that these objectives align closely with Liberia’s national development priorities under the ARREST Agenda. “We will continue to prioritize education, healthcare, economic growth, and climate action as we work to build a resilient and self-sustaining nation,” he declared.
President Boakai also extended his appreciation to the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and all those who contributed to organizing the anniversary event. He lauded the collaboration between government institutions, the diplomatic community, and civil society in advancing Liberia’s development and international engagement.
Concluding his address, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to working with the UN, regional partners, and the broader international community to foster peace, promote sustainable development, and protect human rights. “Together, we will keep working toward a future of prosperity, stability, and sustainable development for everyone, making sure that the UN’s vision stays at the core of Liberia’s foreign and domestic policies,” he stated.
The event, which drew dignitaries from across the diplomatic and development sectors, underscored Liberia’s continued partnership with the United Nations and its enduring role as a champion of peace and cooperation on the global stage.
