GENDER MINISTRY CONDEMNS BRUTAL ASSAULT ON WOMAN, DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR MOB ATTACK

By Our Reporter | Smart News Liberia

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has strongly condemned the violent assault and public humiliation of a woman in Liberia, describing the incident as a serious case of gender-based violence and sexual abuse that violates her fundamental human rights and dignity.

In a statement issued in Monrovia on Thursday, May 7, 2026, the Ministry denounced the attack in which a group of men allegedly pulled the woman from a motorcycle, stripped her, and subjected her to degrading treatment reportedly linked to her choice of clothing.

The Ministry stressed that the act cannot be justified under any cultural, moral, or social reasoning, insisting that it represents a criminal violation rather than any form of “cultural correction” or community enforcement.

According to the statement signed by Communication Specialist D. Webster Cassell, the incident reflects a dangerous pattern of mob behavior that undermines women’s safety and normalizes violence against them in public spaces.

Officials of the Ministry emphasized that no individual or group has the authority to control, police, or violently discipline another person based on appearance or personal expression, warning that such actions constitute abuse and criminal conduct.

The Ministry further classified the incident as both gender-based violence and sexual assault, stating that such levels of humiliation and physical violation are unacceptable under any circumstance.

It expressed deep concern over what it described as a growing tendency in society to shift blame onto victims rather than condemning perpetrators, noting that public debate should focus on the brutality of the attackers rather than the victim’s clothing choices.

The statement also strongly criticized individuals who allegedly filmed, supported, or celebrated the assault, warning that silence or encouragement of such acts contributes to a culture of impunity and violence.

The Ministry is calling on the Liberia National Police (LNP) to urgently investigate the incident, identify all individuals involved, and ensure their arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.

It further urged that justice must extend not only to those who physically assaulted the woman but also to those who participated in or enabled the attack through encouragement or documentation.

Reaffirming its stance, the Ministry warned that mob violence is not justice and cannot replace lawful processes or criminal accountability in Liberia.

The statement also called on civil society organizations, women’s rights advocates, youth groups, religious leaders, and community actors to publicly condemn the attack and intensify awareness against violence targeting women and girls.

According to the Ministry, protecting women’s dignity and safety is not solely a government responsibility but a collective national obligation that requires active public resistance to all forms of gender-based violence.

It further stressed that Liberian women must be able to live freely without fear of harassment, assault, or public shaming, warning that any society that tolerates such violence risks weakening its justice system and social stability.

Addressing the perpetrators directly, the Ministry stated that violence does not reflect strength or moral authority, but rather a breakdown of discipline and respect for human rights.

Meanwhile, the Ministry disclosed that it has intensified efforts to establish direct contact with the victim, assuring that support and protection measures are being prioritized.

The Ministry reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing justice, holding perpetrators accountable, and strengthening national systems aimed at protecting women and girls across Liberia.
