ECC SAYS ARMY CHIEF’S CAVEAT HAS POTENTIAL TO CLOSE CIVIL SPACE FOR POLITICAL PARTICIPATION

LIBERIA – The Elections Coordinating Committee (ECC) says the caveat issued by Liberia’s Army Chief of Staff, Major General Prince C. Johnson III, has the potential to close the civil space for political participation.

Phoning in on OK FM’s afternoon talk show Tuesday, Major General Johnson said anyone involved in unlawful acts during and after the 2023 presidential elections will be dealt with according to the law.

But addressing a news conference in Monrovia recently, ECC chairperson, Oscar Bloh said such a caveat was unhealthy when Liberians are bracing themselves for the 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

Bloh told newsmen the statement from the army chief was out of order, describing it as a military interference in civil matters thus instilling fear in citizens wishing to exercise their constitutional rights.
