LIBERIA – Former Vice President Joseph Boakai is in the United States to seek medication after secretly receiving US$75,000 from President George Weah, a reliable Executive Mansion source informed Smart News Liberia.
The former Liberian Vice President had been removed from a local hospital after falling ill.
A day after leaving hospital in Monrovia, Boakai received a petition from former CDCians who had gone to pledge their support to him for the 2023 presidential election.
The opposition Unity Party is denying their standard bearer is seriously ill. But according to our source, despite the denial of the UP, the Liberian leader has made the gesture to the former vice president to help him seek advanced treatment in the U.S.
Our source said President Weah’s gesture is based on his love for humanity and Boakai’s service to the state and its people.
Boakai’s party officials are refusing to acknowledge the President’s gesture, let alone admit their boss’s illness; and in a press statement said the former VP’s departure to the U.S. is based on a prior schedule.
The Unity Party stated in an official statement yesterday that Amb. Boakai was out of the country to hold several meetings on behalf of the party with Liberians and U.S. officials.
