FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER FACES CRITICISM FOR VIOLATING EXECUTIVE LAW…

Date:

By William Lloyd

Liberia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dee Maxwell Kemeyah, is facing criticism from diplomats over his recent action, which is being viewed as a violation of the country’s executive law.

The Minister is currently on an official trip to Ivory Coast with President Weah, but instead of leaving the affairs of the Ministry in the hands of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Henry B. Fahnbulleh, as required by law, he has dedicated the responsibilities to the Deputy for Administration, Thelma E. Duncan-Sawyer.

Foreign experts and diplomats who have expressed concern over the situation believe that the Minister’s action cannot be justified and that he has brought the entire Ministry into ridicule. Liberian diplomat Amb. George Collie, a Liberian based in the UK, has gone on record to express his disappointment, calling the Minister’s action “reckless” and intended to make President Weah’s administration more unpopular.

According to a reliable source from the Ministry, this is not the first time such action has taken place. The source revealed that the Ministry has built a precedent of succession over time, which has been put into an internal policy that assigns a hierarchical order of precedence. However, the same source also revealed that the former Foreign Affairs Minister, Gbehzohngar Findley, had exhibited similar behavior against his principal deputy, Elias Shoniyin, which led to his resignation due to feelings of humiliation.

Despite complaints regarding the marginalization of the ministry’s deputies, President Weah has not taken any action. This has led to rising concerns and calls on social media, particularly on Facebook, for the President to enforce the executive law of the country and take action against the Minister.

This situation is particularly striking given President Weah’s recent declaration before the Liberian legislature during his nation address, where he claimed that his government has continuously ensured that the rule of law prevails in the country. As the public waits for a resolution, the Foreign Affairs Ministry remains in a state of confusion and frustration, with many questioning the integrity and competence of Minister Kemeyah.
