COURT TO HEAR MOTION FOR RELEASE OF 110 INMATES OVER PROSECUTION DELAY

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – A motion seeking the release of 110 detainees from the Monrovia Central Prison has been filed due to the prosecution’s failure to bring them to trial. The motion, submitted on March 6, 2025, highlights that the detainees have been held without indictment for periods ranging from two to over seven years.

Cllr. Aloysius Toe, the defense lawyer representing the inmates, argues that their constitutional right to a speedy trial has been infringed upon. He claims that the prosecution has not provided justifiable reasons for the prolonged detention without charges.

In opposition, the prosecution has argued that the nature of the crimes allegedly committed by the detainees ranging from murder to robbery and assault justifies their continued imprisonment.  Additionally, the prosecution maintains that the motion lacks the legal grounds for dismissal.

The court is scheduled to hear the motion next week. Should the motion be granted, the inmates could be released, pending the outcome of further legal proceedings.
