DID MAYOR KOLIJEE STRUGGLE TO TELL LIBERIANS ABOUT IMPORTING GUNS TO LIBERIA?

Date:

Monrovia City Mayor and Secretary General of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Jefferson Tamba Koijee has denied importing guns to Liberia contrary to information released by the head of security at the Monrovia City Cooperation (MCC) Col. Thomas Garwo.

Addressing a news conference Monday, Mayor Koijee confirmed importing assorted paramilitary supplies for his municipal police unit. He said the items included uniforms, pepper spray, and other related items for the Monrovia City Police from Israel and that at no time did he import guns as being insinuated.

The ruling party secretary general intoned that the materials entered the country through the Roberts International Airport and not the Freeport of Monrovia as reported.

The name Jefferson Koijee has been linked to all kinds of unlawful acts in Liberia from the early days of the Congress for Democratic Change, the mother political institution of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

The early days’ links were associated with demonstrations, petro bombings, and flogging of partisans with descending views on party-related issues.

The party has on many occasions come in defense of “Jeff” as he is affectionately referred to in the CDC. The institution has always termed news about his acts of hooliganism as “witch-haunt,”  “generational envy” and “fear of his youthful potential “.

Meanwhile, since the inception of the CDC-led government in January 2018, with Jeff commanding more respect from the President’s office, he has been linked to multiple crimes including organizing death squads comprising notorious ex-combatants.

Although not a single individual has come up with definite evidence to substantiate any of these allegations.

With an increased wave of extra-judicial killings (as acknowledged in the US Department of Justice 2022 report on Liberia) and an alleged urge to shut down independent media outlets in the country, Koijee and other inner circle ruling party executives, based on what some described as “politically motivated sentiments,” remain closed references for all kinds of human rights violations and power “desperados” who are prepared to destroy any agency attempting to end their grasp on power.
