DILLON URGES NATIONAL ACTION ON FIRE SAFETY DURING INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY ADDRESS

Date:

MONROVIA – Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon has pledged continued support in the Liberian Senate to push for stronger fire safety measures, including legislative backing and adequate budgetary support for the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS).

Speaking as keynote speaker on Monday, May 5, during the observance of International Firefighters’ Day in Monrovia, Senator Dillon emphasized the urgent need to decentralize firefighting services across all counties and major cities. He said this would ensure swift response to emergencies and contribute to a national strategy for fire risk reduction.

“Fire safety must become a national priority,” Dillon said. “We cannot continue to treat fire disasters as isolated events. This is a development issue that affects our economy, our health system, and the very safety of our people.”

Referencing the day’s theme, “Ensure Fire Safety; Contribute Toward Nation Building,” the Senator stated that fire safety transcends emergency response and is central to national development. He noted that fires destroy homes, schools, markets, and hospitals, undermining the progress Liberia seeks in infrastructure and social welfare.

Senator Dillon called for a shift from reactive to proactive measures, stressing that fire prevention must be institutionalized and adequately funded. He urged for investments in firefighter training, acquisition of modern firefighting equipment, establishment of rapid response systems, and the implementation of public education campaigns at schools, churches, mosques, and marketplaces.

He said Liberia must envision a future where homes and communities are safeguarded by a well-equipped and professional fire service. “Such a nation is not only safer, it is stronger, more productive, and united,” he said.

Addressing the role of citizens, Dillon urged Liberians to view themselves as vital partners in fire prevention. He encouraged the public to buy fire extinguishers, learn basic safety drills, report fire hazards, and comply with fire safety regulations.

“A safer Liberia is not the job of a few,” he said. “It is the responsibility of all Liberians.”

The Senator also honored firefighters who have died in the line of duty and praised those who continue to serve. “To our firefighters, you are nation builders,” Dillon said. “Every life you save, every home you protect, every child you pull from the flames are the bricks of a better Liberia.”

In his closing remarks, Senator Dillon stressed that International Firefighters’ Day should move beyond formality and ignite in every Liberian the spirit of patriotism, vigilance, and collective responsibility for national safety.
