MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Dr. Layli Marpayan, the newly appointed president of the University of Liberia (UL), shared her expectations and commitment to the university’s future during an interview with Executive Mansion reporters on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Following a meeting with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Dr. Marpayan expressed her determination to lead the institution into a new era of growth and academic excellence.
“My expectation is to lead the University of Liberia into its next era,” Dr. Marpayan said during the interview. “I am committed to giving everything I’ve got, everything I’ve learned over the past 30 years of my career as both an academic and administrator. I want to help solve the problems that have been identified, and I want to make the University of Liberia a beacon— not just in Liberia, but in the world.”
Dr. Marpayan emphasized that she intends to implement a different approach to leadership at UL, informed by her extensive experience. “I hope to do things differently than they have been done,” she added. “I want to ensure that the university continues to be a symbol of educational excellence. It has to be the place that leads in academic standards, and I will work tirelessly to make sure we achieve that.”
The newly appointed president also expressed her vision for the future of the university, which she believes can rise above its current challenges. “I’m here to bring about meaningful change,” she stated, noting that the university faces hurdles that require thoughtful planning and innovative solutions. “The goal is to make the University of Liberia a place that not only serves as the flagship institution of higher learning in Liberia but is recognized globally for its contributions to education.”
In a related development, the University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association (ULFASA) has given its full endorsement to Dr. Marpayan’s appointment. On January 8, 2025, the association released a statement of congratulations, praising both Dr. Marpayan’s appointment and the transparent process led by the UL Presidential Search Committee. ULFASA highlighted the importance of a rigorous and inclusive selection process that resulted in Dr. Marpayan being chosen to lead the university through its present challenges.
The association also acknowledged the significant difficulties the university faces, particularly concerning the well-being of its faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Marpayan’s appointment, which was officially confirmed by President Boakai on January 4, 2025, was endorsed by the university’s Board of Trustees in accordance with the institution’s charter. In his letter of appointment, President Boakai expressed full confidence in Dr. Marpayan’s abilities, her integrity, and her vast experience in academia.
