DR. LAYLI MARPAYAN SETS AMBITIOUS GOALS FOR UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA IN NEW ROLE

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Dr. Layli Marpayan, the newly appointed president of the University of Liberia (UL), shared her expectations and commitment to the university’s future during an interview with Executive Mansion reporters on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Following a meeting with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Dr. Marpayan expressed her determination to lead the institution into a new era of growth and academic excellence.

“My expectation is to lead the University of Liberia into its next era,” Dr. Marpayan said during the interview. “I am committed to giving everything I’ve got, everything I’ve learned over the past 30 years of my career as both an academic and administrator. I want to help solve the problems that have been identified, and I want to make the University of Liberia a beacon— not just in Liberia, but in the world.”

Dr. Marpayan emphasized that she intends to implement a different approach to leadership at UL, informed by her extensive experience. “I hope to do things differently than they have been done,” she added. “I want to ensure that the university continues to be a symbol of educational excellence. It has to be the place that leads in academic standards, and I will work tirelessly to make sure we achieve that.”

The newly appointed president also expressed her vision for the future of the university, which she believes can rise above its current challenges. “I’m here to bring about meaningful change,” she stated, noting that the university faces hurdles that require thoughtful planning and innovative solutions. “The goal is to make the University of Liberia a place that not only serves as the flagship institution of higher learning in Liberia but is recognized globally for its contributions to education.”

In a related development, the University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association (ULFASA) has given its full endorsement to Dr. Marpayan’s appointment. On January 8, 2025, the association released a statement of congratulations, praising both Dr. Marpayan’s appointment and the transparent process led by the UL Presidential Search Committee. ULFASA highlighted the importance of a rigorous and inclusive selection process that resulted in Dr. Marpayan being chosen to lead the university through its present challenges.

The association also acknowledged the significant difficulties the university faces, particularly concerning the well-being of its faculty, staff, and students. ULFASA pointed to the need for systemic reforms to address these issues and foster a sustainable path forward. “The challenges at the University of Liberia require strategic decision-making and careful planning,” the statement read. “It is critical that we move forward with clear, actionable goals that can improve the academic environment and the quality of education.”

In its message of support, ULFASA reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside Dr. Marpayan to address the university’s long-standing issues. The association expressed its readiness to be a proactive partner in driving change and ensuring that meaningful improvements are made. Additionally, ULFASA called on its members to exercise patience and remain engaged as discussions about resolving ongoing welfare-related concerns continue.

Dr. Marpayan’s appointment, which was officially confirmed by President Boakai on January 4, 2025, was endorsed by the university’s Board of Trustees in accordance with the institution’s charter. In his letter of appointment, President Boakai expressed full confidence in Dr. Marpayan’s abilities, her integrity, and her vast experience in academia. He underscored his belief that she would apply these qualities in her leadership of the university and her service to the nation.
