ECC CALLS ON LIBERIANS TO REMAIN CALM AND AWAIT NEC’S OFFICIAL RESULTS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Elections Coordinating Committee (ECC) has called on all candidates and Liberians to remain calm and await the official results to be announced by the National Elections Commission.

On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, a presidential run-off election was conducted between incumbent President George M. Weah and Amb. Joseph N. Boakai of the Unity Party.

The ECC also urged the NEC to proceed with the timely pronouncement of the election results.

According to the ECC, the elections were nationally owned with resources largely provided by the Government of Liberia, noting that electoral security was provided by the Joint Security Taskforce and the entire electoral process was managed by the National Elections Commission with minimum technical and logistical support from international development partners. ECC adeed that the elections were conducted without any significant electoral law reform, particularly with the New Elections Law of Liberia.

The preliminary statement, which is based on reports from 1,185 of the 1200 stationary observers who were proportionately distributed to polling stations across the country to observe, includes the ECC’s observation of the electoral cycle, including the runoff that occurred on November 14, 2023. They noted that ECC is aware that there are still important tasks to finish, like tallying votes and deciding electoral petitions.

The ECC stated that the information in their statement is predicated on the observations that have been made thus far. ”The ECC will keep the public informed about the remaining steps in the process. Later, it will release a thorough report that includes a detailed analysis of the election cycle and suggestions for electoral reform.”

At each step of this election, Liberians from all walks of life have expressed their desire for Liberia – one of the oldest continuous republics in the world – to become a beacon of peaceful citizen-centered democratic governance in the region. The United States remains committed to helping the people of Liberia achieve this goal.
