MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Jefferson Karmoh, former National Security Advisor to ex-President George Weah, has requested a separate trial in the ongoing high-profile economic sabotage case involving several key figures from the former government, including ex-Finance Minister Samuel Tweah. Karmoh, through his attorney Cllr. Mamee S. Gongbah, filed a motion at Criminal Court C, urging the court to sever his trial from the others, claiming that his role in the alleged criminal activities differs significantly from those of his co-defendants.
The motion points out that the charges leveled against Karmoh are distinct from those brought against other defendants. Karmoh is accused of economic sabotage, fraud, money laundering, theft, and other crimes, along with co-defendants Tweah and several others. However, Karmoh’s legal team argues that trying him alongside the other defendants would be prejudicial, given the variance in the allegations against each individual.
Cllr. Gongbah cited Section 5.6 of the Criminal Procedure Law, which allows the court to grant severance to avoid prejudice or inconvenience, and emphasized that a separate trial would ensure a fairer process. Karmoh’s legal team is seeking a ruling that would prioritize his case, thereby allowing for a more focused examination of his actions within the broader context of the alleged economic crimes.
