LIBERIA SEEKS MALI’S SUPPORT FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL BID

Date:

BAMAKO – In a diplomatic move to bolster Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti led a high-level delegation to Mali, where she met with President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Minister Nyanti delivered a message of friendship from President Joseph Boakai, emphasizing Liberia’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations as it seeks a place on the global decision-making body. She underscored that Liberia’s candidacy is not just about securing a seat but about representing Africa’s collective interests on the Security Council.

“To this end, it seems important, in such circumstances, to seek the support of sister countries in order to obtain the greatest possible number of votes for the position in question,” Minister Nyanti stated. She highlighted that Liberia’s vision is to defend the continent’s strategic interests and ensure that Africa’s voice is strongly represented in global security and peacekeeping discussions.

The meeting in Koulouba reflected Liberia’s broader diplomatic push to gather regional backing for its bid. Minister Nyanti noted the deep historical, geographical, and cultural ties between Mali and Liberia, stressing that “we have a common destiny.” She expressed satisfaction with the discussions and the opportunity to reinforce bilateral relations between the two countries.
