LIBERIA – As the race heats up for the Nimba County Senatorial By-Election scheduled for April 22, 2025, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has revealed the provisional list of eight aspirants, signaling a competitive battle for the seat. The list showcases a mix of independent candidates and representatives from various political parties, all vying for the opportunity to represent the county in Liberia’s legislature.
Among the candidates is Torbor Tee Wonokay Famgalo, running independently, alongside Edith Lianue Gongloe-Weh and George Parkinson Gonpu, also independent. Representing political parties, B. Mack Gblinwon is running under the banner of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), while Samuel Gongben Kogar seeks the support of voters as a member of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR). Richard Matenckay Tingban, affiliated with the African Democratic Movement-Liberia (ADML), and Garrison Doldeh Vealue, Jr. from Vision for Liberia Transformation (VOLT) are also in the running. Justin Oldpa Yeazeahn, known as Prophet Key, is another independent aspirant.
Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia has allocated a total of two million United States dollars to support the conduct of the upcoming senatorial by-election. Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, made this announcement on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the conclusion of the candidate nomination exercise for the by-election. The funding is aimed at ensuring the smooth organization of the election, which will fill the vacant Senate seat left by the late Prince Y. Johnson, who passed away on November 28, 2024, at the age of 72.
The NEC has indicated that the list of candidates remains provisional and that the review process is still underway. Candidates or political parties have the opportunity to file challenges, which could result in changes to the final list of eligible contenders. This procedural step ensures that the election remains in line with electoral laws and reflects a transparent process.
