SENATE TO ADDRESS KEY LEGISLATIVE AGENDA IN 2ND QUARTER SESSION STARTING TOMORROW

Date:

MONROVIA – The Liberian Senate will convene the 2nd quarter of the first session of the 55th Legislature on Thursday, May 15, 2024.

A Senate release states that the commencement of the 2nd quarter is in accordance with the amended Act of the Legislature, which divides the legislative calendar into three quarters.

Members of the Senate returned to Capitol Hill following a two-month recess from March 15 to May 10, 2024.

The first quarter of the Liberian Senate saw the induction of 10 new Senators and the reelection of four Senators who secured victory in the 2023 Presidential and Legislative elections.

Additionally, this period marked the election of Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence as President Pro-tempore of the Senate, along with the appointment of other members to leadership positions within the Senate.

Exercising its constitutional powers, the Senate focused much of its first quarter on the vetting and confirmation of presidential nominees.

The legislative actions also included the passage of the 2024 National Budget, facilitating the smooth operation of the Boakai-Koung administration.

The Senate also concurred with the House of Representatives on a resolution to establish the long-awaited War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC).

During the 2nd quarter, the Liberian Senate will review and take legislative action on pending legislation currently in committee rooms.

Key bills to be considered include the Presidential Transitional Bill, an Act to amend Title 30, Public Authorities Law, Liberia Codes of Law Revised to establish the Liberian National Tourism Authority Act (LNTA), an Act to repeal Chapter 25, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Title 12, Executive Law of 1972, Liberia Codes of Law Revised, and to establish in its place a new Chapter 25 to be known as the Ministry of Local Government, among others.
