22YR OLD MATHS MAJOR CLINTON PAYE QUEE DUX UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA

Date:

MONROVIA – Clinton Paye Quee, a 22yr Old Mathematics Major and Physics Manor, has been named as the “Valediction and Touchbearer”, of the 103rd graduating class of the University of Liberia (UL). Clinton treks out in an extraordinary style, 3.633, Magna Cum Laude. He is a graduate of the Ganta United Methodist School class of 2017.

Born unto the union of Mr. Sylvester and Mrs. Theresa Quee at the Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town, Bushrod Island Monrovia Liberia on May 28, 2000, Quee is a 2017 graduate of the Ganta United Methodist School. His mother hails from Tudin- a small town in Nimba County and his father from Kpain.

He started his primary education at the Faith Mission Temple Academy in New Kru Town and later moved to Ganta City, Nimba County in 2010 with his parents and got enrolled at the Ganta Public School (Child-Friendly School).

At Ganta Public School, Quee was known by every student as a singer and a recital of recitations. He had little or no interest in academic activities and spent most of his time after school teaching kids karate- this he said was “a normal routine for me to fall asleep whenever my Mathematics teacher entered class”.

On many occasions, he would be asked to stand at the back of the class so the sleep can vanish but he consistently sleeps in all his classes so the teacher gave up. From 6th to 8th grade, he literally scored zero in Mathematics from periods one through six. However, when Clinton was promoted to grade 8, he left the Ganta Public School and enrolled at the famous Ganta United Methodist School (GUMS).

Fast forward, Quee was not still good at maths at GUMS and at the end of grade 10, he had up to ten red marks on his report card in both Algebra and Geometry. He played history for the Ganta United Methodist school quizzing team.

From Zero to Hero

Around the end of the academic year, (during 5th period) Martin Harris who was then in 9th grade and the best mathematician in the entire School, walked up to Quee and said: “I intend to come to help you guys with your Mathematics during the preparation of your national exam”, a statement that motivated Clinton’s feat today. He felt challenged and started practicing the fundamentals of arithmetic. Each day he would solve not less than five problems, and just in case he finds difficulty solving a particular problem or understanding certain concepts, he had the 2019 dux of the Cuttington University in the person of Preston Nyanamah living nearby, who he said had an “indelible imprint on this milestone”.

Excitedly, in 12th grade, Quee score 100% in the first-period Algebra test administered by his teacher in Hamilton Paye Tolehyon Dorleleay. This was a surprise to most of his classmates which later created speculation among some members of the class claiming that “my parents took me to medicine man during the vacation. Hahaha… Anyways, that was the beginning of my mathematical journey”.

Since then, he has been winning several awards. At GUMS, Clinton participated in the “I-Help Liberia” Mathematics Olympics conducted in 2017 and was awarded the best-performing student. He also participated in the national quizzing tournament conducted by the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiative (LMDI) and was awarded the best answerer in the tournament.

At the Univesity of Liberia

In November of 2017, Quee got an admission to study at the University of Liberia where he began instrumental in conducting tutorials for students in all the math courses he did and also got all A’s except for two courses (numerical analysis and abstract algebra) in which he got B’s.

He served as the president of the Mathematics Students Association where he supervised and led hundreds of students from both the pure Math and Statistics Programs.

However, to enhance his study, Quee enrolled at Liberia Cooperative Standard Education School System (LICOCESS) and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in mathematics education as valedictorian in January 2021.

In 2021, he participated in the international youth math challenge and was awarded a certificate for solving five out of the six problems for the challenge.

And in May of this year, he will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a minor in physics from the University of Liberia with Honors. He is the owner of the YouTube channel called “mathscience hub” which he officially uses to upload content in Math, Physics, and other science-related fields. Credit:  Siaway T Miapue
