LIBERIA: NEC ANNOUNCES ARRIVAL OF BALLOT PAPERS FROM GHANA

Date:

MONROVIA – Liberia National Elections Commission (NEC), in keeping with its operational plan, has announced the arrival of ballot papers for the conduct of the country’s general elections slated for 10 October 2023.

Making the disclosure today about the ballot papers arrival in the country at the maiden edition of the Commission’s weekly press briefings ahead of next month’s elections at its Sinkor Headquarters, the electoral body’s chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, divulged that the ballot papers arrived from the Republic of Ghana on Monday, 25 September 2023.

As expected, she announced that the ballot papers are in three categories, namely; Presidential, Senatorial, and Representative.

For the quantity of ballots now in the country, Browne-Lansanah announced that 3,320,500 ballot papers are for the conduct of the presidential election, while there are also 3,402,122 ballots for the senatorial election, and 3,403,208 ballots for the representative election.

The ballots are currently in secured storage under state security protection, according to the NEC boss.

Deployment of ballot papers and other sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials to the 19 electoral offices in the 15 counties of Liberia for onward distribution to the 280 voting precincts will commence in a few days’ time,” Browne-Lansanah further announced.

Meanwhile, assorted electoral materials including ballot boxes, precinct kits, indelible ink, and assorted stationary procured internationally, have also arrived in the country, according the NEC chair person, who disclosed that packaging of electoral materials for the 5,890 polling places in the country, began about two weeks ago and is currently ongoing.

She stated that distribution of these materials to the various counties’ warehouses will commence in the next few days, adding that, especially given the challenges with delivery of such materials to some parts of the country, staff of the Commission are working day and night to ensure electoral materials are deployed in time for the 10 October 2023 elections.
