LIBERIA GETS SECOND FEMALE SENATE PRO-TEMPORE – AS KARNGA-LAWRENCE WINS ON WHITE BALLOT

Date:

MONROVIA – Grand Bassa County Senator, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence is the second female to become Senate President Pro-tempore of the Liberian Senate, as she won on white ballot earlier today in a leadership election at the Capitol Building, in Monrovia.

Karnga-Lawrence’s predecessor, Grace Beatrice Minor served as President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate from 2002 to 2003.

At the eleventh hour to the election for Pro-Tempore, another senator of Bassa, Milton Gbehzohngar Findley declined his nomination to contest, rendering the legislative electoral process a one-horse race.

As Pro Tempore, Senator Karnga-Lawrence will work with other leaders of the Senate to steer the affairs of the august body during the sittings of the 55th Legislature.

The leadership of the Liberian Senate for the 55th Legislature includes Grand Bassa Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Pro Tempore; Senator James P. Biney of Maryland, Chairman on Executive; Montserrado County’s Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, Chairman of Foreign Affairs; outgoing Pro-Tempore, Senator Albert T. Chie of Grand Kru, Chairman on Public Works; and Senator Cllr. Augustine Chea of Sinoe, Chairman on Judiciary.

Others are Bong County’s Senator Prince K. Moye, Chair of Ways, Means, Finance and Budget; Senator Momo T. Cyrus of Lofa County, Chair of Defense Security and Veteran Affairs; Maryland County’s Senator J. Gbleh-bo Brown, Chairman of Rules, Order and Administration; and  Senator Nathaniel F. McGill of Margibi County, Chair of the Committee on Education and Public Administration.

The rest are Senator  Dabah M. Varpilah of Grand Cape Mount County, Chair of Health; Nimba County’s Prince Y. Johnson, Chair of Internal Affairs; and Senator Amara M. Konneh of Gbarpolu County, Chairman of Public Account and Audit.

Meanwhile, Bomi County’s two senators, Edwin M. Snowe, Jr. and J. Alex Tyler are Liberia’s Representatives to ECOWAS, from the Liberian Senate, while River Gee and Sinoe County Senators Francis Dopoe and Cyrton Duncan are the Senate’s Representatives on behalf of Liberia to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
