INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO DEATH OF INMATE AT SALEM POLICE DEPOT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Police are currently investigating the tragic death of an inmate discovered at the Salem Police Depot, located adjacent to the renowned Shark’s Business Center in Airfield Sinkor.

The lifeless body of Prince Wouyou, a resident of 18th Street Sinkor believed to be in his mid-twenties, was found hanging in a cell alongside five other inmates, according to a report by the Independent Probe.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the five other inmates reported they were asleep and woke up to find Wouyou’s lifeless body.

Wouyou was brought to the Salem Police Depot by an unnamed lawyer who alleged that the deceased, a mechanic, had fled with his Two Hundred United States dollars intended for vehicle repairs. Wouyou was reportedly spotted at an entertainment venue on 11th Street Sinkor, leading to his arrest.

Police spokesman Moses Carter confirmed the incident, stating that the Liberia National Police (LNP) is actively conducting investigations. An official press statement regarding the incident will be released soon.

This incident echoes a similar tragedy from April 2023 when Mohammed Diallo died in police custody at the same Salem Depot. Diallo’s family demanded explanations from the Liberia National Police regarding his sudden death. Diallo had been detained for over three years for allegedly owing a colleague LD430 (US $6). His death was allegedly caused by the Commander of the Salem Depot, Harry Bai, who reportedly pepper sprayed the cell, causing three inmates to faint and resulting in Diallo’s death.

Inspector General of Police, Georgery Coleman, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding Prince Wreyou’s death. The recent incidents have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of inmates in police custody, prompting calls for accountability and improved conditions in detention facilities.
