Date:

An Opinion By Socrates Smythe Saywon

The recent one-day Anti-corruption Policy Dialogue organized by the Embassy of Sweden in Liberia, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) deserves commendation for its commitment to strengthening Liberia’s anti-corruption framework.

Held under the theme “Increasing Funding to Anti-corruption Efforts: Benefits and Recommended Actions,” this dialogue has provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to discuss and strategize on ways to enhance the effectiveness of the national budget as a tool for anti-corruption and reforms.

The Embassy of Sweden in Liberia and SIDA’s generous funding support underscores their unwavering commitment to supporting Liberia’s efforts to combat corruption and promote transparency. Their recognition of the importance of adequate funding for public integrity institutions such as the General Auditing Commission (GAC), Liberia Anti-corruption Commission (LACC), Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC), and the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) is commendable.

Additionally, CENTAL’s role in organizing this dialogue and facilitating meaningful discussions among stakeholders has been pivotal. By focusing on actionable strategies and recommended actions, CENTAL has demonstrated its commitment to driving tangible outcomes that will contribute to Liberia’s anti-corruption agenda.

Enhancing the effectiveness of the national budget as a tool for anti-corruption and reforms is a laudable goal that requires collective effort and collaboration. The dialogue’s emphasis on this objective signifies a step in the right direction and highlights the importance of prioritizing anti-corruption initiatives in national budgetary planning.

In conclusion, the Embassy of Sweden in Liberia, SIDA, and CENTAL deserve applause for their collaborative efforts in organizing the one-day Anti-corruption Policy Dialogue. Their commitment to championing anti-corruption efforts, fostering transparency, and promoting good governance in Liberia sets a positive example for both domestic and international stakeholders.

As Liberia continues its journey towards a more transparent and accountable governance system, it is crucial for all stakeholders to emulate the proactive approach demonstrated by these organizations. Together, we can make a difference and contribute to building a brighter future for Liberia, free from corruption and characterized by transparency, accountability, and prosperity.
