PRESIDENT BOAKAI STRONGLY CONDEMNS DRUG TRAFFICKING AT YOUTH REHABILITATION EVENT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Recently, at a ceremony marking the successful rehabilitation of 127 at-risk youth through the Joint Inter-Sectorial At-Risk Youth Empowerment Program, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai delivered a forceful message to illicit drug traffickers and dealers in Liberia. He urged them to halt their illegal activities and emphasized the government’s unwavering resolve to tackle drug-related offenses.

President Boakai equated drug traffickers and dealers with heartless criminals and assured that the Government of Liberia (GoL) would utilize every legal avenue to combat the illicit drug trade.

“We will use all necessary legal means against drug dealers who jeopardize the future of our youth, our upcoming leaders. They will face severe consequences as they pose a threat to our nation,” declared President Boakai.

He unveiled plans to collaborate with the Legislature on legislation to address drug abuse and support vulnerable youth. The President hailed the rehabilitated youth as champions of the recovery initiative and pledged government assistance for their successful reintegration into society.

President Boakai also affirmed to the United Nations and development partners that funds designated for the fight against drug abuse would be managed with integrity and transparency.

Ms. Christine N. Umutoni, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, lauded the resilience of the rehabilitated youth, recognizing them as triumphant participants in the fight against drug abuse. She urged them to maintain their focus and continue making positive impacts in Liberia.

Youth and Sports Minister J. Cole Bangalu thanked President Boakai for his backing of the program, disclosing that 127 out of 178 enrolled youth had completed rehabilitation, passing their exit urine drug tests.

Senator Darba Varpilah from Grand Cape Mount County commended President Boakai’s dedication to safeguarding Liberia’s youth. He encouraged the rehabilitated youth to remain committed to their recovery journey amidst the challenges ahead.
