LIBERIA ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMISSION SECURES CONVICTION AGAINST FORMER PPAL OFFICIALS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has achieved a significant legal victory in the ongoing fight against corruption. On Monday, July 15, 2024, the Trial Jury in Criminal Court ‘C’ delivered a unanimous guilty verdict against former officials of the Plan Parenthood Association of Liberia (PPAL). The defendants, Miatta K.K. Kojolo (former Executive Director), Ernest Vobah (former Finance & Administrative Manager), Peter Collins (former Board Vice Chairperson), and William Gibson (former HR Officer), were found guilty on all four counts: Economic Sabotage, Misapplication of Entrusted Property, Speculation or Wagering on Official Action or Information, and Criminal Conspiracy.

This landmark verdict follows months of meticulous investigation and a robust presentation of evidence by the State, demonstrating the depth of the charges and the severity of the offenses committed. According to a press statement from the LACC, the successful prosecution underscores the Commission’s unwavering commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within both public and private sectors of Liberia.

The case not only highlights the LACC’s determination to root out corruption but also serves as a stark warning to those who would misuse entrusted positions for personal gain. The guilty verdict signifies a step forward in Liberia’s efforts to strengthen governance and eradicate systemic corruption that hampers national development. It is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Judiciary, the Prosecution team, and all stakeholders involved in ensuring due process and fairness throughout the trial.

Moving forward, per legal procedures, the defense counsel has four working days to file a Motion for a New Trial. The presiding Judge will subsequently review the motion and the trial’s evidence to decide whether to grant or deny it. The LACC expressed gratitude for the dedicated efforts of all involved in securing justice in this case, affirming its commitment to pursuing similar cases vigorously in the future to safeguard Liberia’s progress and prosperity.
