CDC SECRETARY GENERAL ACCUSES GOVERNMENT OF THREATENING WEAH’S LIFE

Date:

In a tense news conference on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in Monrovia, Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Secretary General Jefferson Koijee accused the Liberian government of threatening former President George Weah’s life. Koijee alleged that the substantial presence of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) during Weah’s recent return at Roberts International Airport (RIA) was a government attempt to assassinate him.

Koijee, the former Mayor of Monrovia, warned that the CDC would defend its leader if the government continued to allegedly attack and deny Weah access to public facilities. In response to these allegations, the House of Representatives has summoned the Ministry of National Defense, AFL authorities, and the National Security Advisor to explain the military’s involvement at the airport.

Additionally, Koijee dismissed as baseless the claims by Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah that CDC supporters had threatened to burn down the airport. He characterized Piah’s allegations as “verbal ejaculation,” lacking any truth.

Earlier in the week, Piah stated that the AFL’s intervention was necessary due to threats from CDC supporters to set the airport ablaze. Koijee vehemently denied these accusations, calling them malicious and misleading. The political tension highlights ongoing disputes between the current government and the opposition CDC.
