2025 NATIONAL BUDGET SUBMITTED AMID HOUSE DIVISIONS OVER SPEAKER KOFFA’S LEADERSHIP

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Executive Branch, through the Office of the Chief Clerk, has presented the 2025 Draft National Budget to the Majority Bloc in the House of Representatives, despite escalating divisions within the legislative body.

The Majority Bloc, now comprising over 40 lawmakers, has been at the forefront of efforts to unseat House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, citing allegations of corruption and conflicts of interest. In contrast, the Pro-Koffa Bloc, with fewer than 37 members, has struggled to convene sessions due to an inability to meet the required quorum, further deepening the legislative stalemate.

This ongoing political discord has delayed the submission of the 2025 Draft National Budget, which had already been postponed twice. However, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Majority Bloc, led by Representative Samuel Kogar, confirmed they had officially received the proposed budget from the Executive Branch.

Rep. Kogar expressed the bloc’s readiness to begin deliberations, stating that the budget had been directed to the committee room for detailed examination and review. Speaking during an interview on the OK Morning Rush, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that the budget aligns with Liberia’s national priorities.

“We now have the budget, and we are ready to debate it. It has been submitted to the committee room today,” Kogar affirmed, signaling the Majority Bloc’s commitment to progressing with the fiscal plan despite the political turbulence.

The receipt of the budget marks a significant step in addressing Liberia’s financial planning for the upcoming year, even as tensions surrounding Speaker Koffa’s leadership continue to loom over legislative proceedings.
