NPHIL INVESTIGATES POX-LIKE DISEASE OUTBREAK IN GREENVILLE PRISON

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has launched an investigation into reports of a pox-like disease among inmates at a prison in Greenville, Sinoe County. In a press release issued on Saturday, January 25, 2025, and signed by Director-General Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, NPHIL confirmed its heightened attention to the situation, given the ongoing Mpox outbreak across the continent and globally, which the institute has been addressing in Liberia.

Dr. Nyan disclosed that County and District Surveillance Officers have been mobilized to conduct epidemiological investigations. These include assessing suspected cases among inmates to evaluate symptoms and identify the nature of the disease. Specimens will also be collected and sent to the National Reference Laboratory for testing to determine the pathogen involved and its biomolecular characteristics.

The NPHIL urged the public to remain calm and refrain from panicking as the investigation unfolds. The institute advised citizens to avoid unnecessary contact, maintain sanitary measures, and rely on accurate information directly from NPHIL. Updates will be provided promptly as more information becomes available, the statement added.

This response comes as part of NPHIL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public health systems and ensure transparent communication during health crises. Dr. Nyan reassured the public of NPHIL’s commitment to investigating the reports thoroughly and managing any potential risks effectively.
