MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has responded to reports of a planned protest by motorcyclists in Monrovia, emphasizing the need for legal compliance and public safety.
In a statement released on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, and signed by Chief Spokesperson DCP Cecelia G. Clarke, the police acknowledged awareness of the planned demonstration organized by the Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia (SUMTUL) Inc. The LNP called on the group to follow legal procedures by notifying the Ministry of Justice before staging any public protest.
The police highlighted the constitutional right to peaceful assembly as guaranteed under Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution but stressed that such rights must be exercised within the framework of the law. According to the LNP, informing the Ministry of Justice is a necessary step to ensure that any public gathering is conducted peacefully and lawfully.
Assuring the public of its commitment to maintaining peace, the LNP stated that once the proper legal processes are followed, the police will provide security to protect both the protestors and the wider community. The police further warned motorcyclists against engaging in violence, disruption, or any unlawful behavior that could threaten public order.
The LNP encouraged residents of Monrovia to continue their daily activities without concern, stating that the police are in active discussions with stakeholders regarding the planned protest. The statement reaffirmed the police’s position on upholding public safety while respecting the rights of citizens to express their grievances through lawful channels.
The planned protest comes amid rising tensions within the motorcycle transport sector, though the specific reasons for the demonstration remain unclear.
