DEPUTY YOUTH MINISTER ACCUSED OF RAPING 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL, STEPS ASIDE FOR POLICE PROBE

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports has confirmed that Deputy Minister for Youth Development, J. Bryant McGill, is under police investigation following an allegation of raping a 14-year-old girl. The complaint was filed with the Liberia National Police (LNP) by the girl’s father, Mr. Christopher Davis, who also serves as Deputy Chief of Security at the Ministry.

In a statement issued Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Ministry said both the accused deputy minister and the complainant are staff members. It assured the public that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness, given its gravity and implications for justice and public trust.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, confirmed that the police are leading the investigation and stressed his administration’s firm stance against misconduct. “Yes, we can confirm the case is with the police. Investigation is ongoing. At the Ministry under my watch, there is zero tolerance for unethical behavior, especially sexual misconduct. We are not taking this lightly,” Bangalu stated. He further noted that administrative measures will follow swiftly once the investigation concludes.

Deputy Minister McGill has denied the allegation but requested a leave of absence to avoid influencing the process. The Ministry said it has accepted his request and forwarded it to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for approval.

“The Ministry will remain in close communication with the Liberia National Police as their investigation unfolds and reaffirms its full commitment to cooperating with law enforcement to ensure a thorough, impartial, and transparent process,” the statement read.

The Ministry urged the public and media to allow investigators to handle the case without interference, promising to release updates as new information emerges.
