LIBERIA: ANC RAISES ALARM, REJECTS WEEDOR OVER NEC INDEPENDENCE CONCERNS

MONROVIA – The opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC), led by political leader Alexander B. Cummings, has declared a vote of no confidence in Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor as Acting Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, citing serious concerns about his neutrality and independence.

In a press statement released on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the ANC questioned Weedor’s suitability to lead Liberia’s electoral body, pointing to his conduct during the 2023 general and presidential elections as a major source of concern.

According to the party, a widely circulated video from the 2023 polls showed Weedor appearing to endorse and prematurely declare victory for the ruling Unity Party, a claim that was later contradicted by official results from the electoral commission.

The ANC argued that such actions raise troubling questions about his ability to act impartially, especially in a role that demands strict neutrality and professionalism.

While acknowledging Weedor’s years of service within the electoral body, the ANC maintained that past behavior cannot be ignored when considering such a critical appointment.

In its statement, signed by National Chairman Cllr. Lafayette E.O. Gould, the party emphasized that the National Elections Commission remains one of Liberia’s most vital democratic institutions, tasked with ensuring credible elections and safeguarding public trust.

The ANC further expressed concern over what it described as Weedor’s perceived closeness to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, warning that such ties could undermine confidence in the independence of the commission.

The party stressed that Liberia’s Constitution and electoral laws require individuals serving on the NEC Board of Commissioners, particularly the chairperson, to demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, independence, and neutrality.

It cautioned that any perception of political bias within the NEC could weaken public confidence in future elections and potentially heighten political tensions in an already fragile democratic environment.

As a result, the ANC is calling on the Liberian Senate to conduct a thorough, transparent, and independent review of Weedor’s nomination before any confirmation is made.

The party also urged opposition groups, civil society organizations, and ordinary citizens to remain vigilant, emphasizing that protecting the credibility of Liberia’s electoral system is essential for sustaining democratic governance and national stability.
