GARDNERVILLE, MONTSERRADO COUNTY – The Liberia National Police has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that a motorcyclist was shot and killed by a police officer during a security disturbance in the Chicken Soup Factory Community near the old LPRC Junction on the Japan Freeway in Gardnerville.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 7, 2026, triggered widespread public concern and online reactions after allegations emerged that an officer of the Liberia National Police had fatally shot a motorcyclist during the operation.
However, in an official statement issued through its Press and Public Affairs Division, the LNP clarified that no death was recorded during the incident, contrary to claims being shared across various social media platforms.
According to the Police, preliminary information gathered by investigators indicates that officers responded after receiving reports that angry residents had allegedly surrounded a residence where a suspected armed robbery suspect had reportedly sought refuge.
The LNP explained that there were concerns that the crowd intended to set the house ablaze, prompting police intervention aimed at preventing what authorities described as a possible act of mob violence.
Police authorities stated that officers moved in to restore calm, protect lives and property, and ensure that all individuals connected to the matter were secured for lawful investigation in accordance with Liberia’s legal procedures.
During the operation, one individual sustained a gunshot wound under circumstances the Police say are still being investigated.
Authorities disclosed that the injured person was immediately transported for medical treatment and is currently receiving care at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia.
The Liberia National Police emphasized that incidents involving the discharge of firearms by law enforcement officers are treated with seriousness and subjected to internal review procedures and accountability mechanisms.
According to the statement, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation as the institution seeks to establish exactly what transpired during the security response.
The Police also used the opportunity to caution members of the public against acts of vigilantism and mob justice, warning that such actions undermine the rule of law and place lives at risk.
The LNP stressed that all individuals accused or suspected of criminal activity are entitled to due process and legal protection under the Constitution and laws of Liberia.
Authorities further noted that attempts by citizens to attack suspects outside the judicial process could escalate violence and complicate ongoing criminal investigations.
The statement comes amid growing public scrutiny over police conduct and the use of force by security personnel in Liberia, particularly in tense community situations involving suspected criminals.
Despite the controversy surrounding Thursday’s incident, the Liberia National Police maintained that it remains committed to enforcing the law professionally while respecting the rights and dignity of all persons.
The institution reaffirmed its responsibility to maintain public safety, protect lives and property, and respond to emergencies with restraint and accountability as investigations into the Gardnerville shooting continue.
