ANTI FOREIGNER PROTESTS IN SOUTH AFRICA PROMPT GOL TO LAUNCH EMERGENCY REPATRIATION AMID JUNE 30 ULTIMATUM

MONROVIA – The Liberian government has launched an emergency voluntary repatriation exercise for its citizens in South Africa as anti-foreigner protests and growing security concerns continue to raise fears ahead of a reported June 30 ultimatum calling for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.

The intervention underscores the seriousness of the evolving situation, with authorities in Monrovia moving swiftly to protect Liberians who fear becoming caught up in mounting hostility toward migrants. Officials say the decision follows weeks of close monitoring by the Liberian Embassy in Pretoria amid reports of demonstrations and actions targeting foreign nationals across parts of South Africa.

In a coordinated response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) have initiated a joint emergency operation to facilitate the safe return of Liberians who have requested to leave the country voluntarily.

According to the government, 263 Liberians have been identified as currently residing in South Africa. Of that number, 29 have formally requested voluntary repatriation and are expected to be flown back to Liberia under arrangements made by the government.

The urgency of the exercise has been heightened by reports of a June 30 ultimatum issued by a group of private South African protesters calling for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country. Although not an official directive from the South African government, the reported ultimatum has increased anxiety among migrant communities and prompted Liberia to take precautionary measures to safeguard its citizens.

Government officials revealed that the majority of Liberians living in South Africa are undocumented, placing them at increased risk of arrest, detention, or deportation under South African immigration laws if immigration enforcement intensifies.

To address this challenge, the Liberian Embassy in Pretoria has processed Emergency Travel Certificates for undocumented Liberians participating in the repatriation exercise. The Embassy has also engaged South African authorities to facilitate their safe and orderly departure without unnecessary legal complications.

The government praised the leadership of Liberian communities in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town for assisting embassy officials during outreach efforts. Their cooperation, officials said, enabled direct engagement with Liberian nationals and the collection of accurate information necessary to coordinate the emergency response.

Liberians who remain in South Africa have been urged to stay calm, avoid misinformation, and maintain regular communication with the Liberian Embassy through established channels. Officials say continued contact is essential for coordinating assistance and responding quickly should the security situation deteriorate further.

The emergency repatriation exercise reflects growing concern over the uncertainty facing undocumented migrants in South Africa, where periodic outbreaks of anti-foreigner sentiment have previously resulted in violence, displacement, and heightened fears among immigrant communities.

The Liberian government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens abroad, stressing that it will continue working closely with South African authorities and other relevant stakeholders as developments unfold. With tensions remaining high and uncertainty surrounding the reported June 30 ultimatum, Liberian authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation while working to ensure that vulnerable citizens are safely returned home and those who remain continue to receive consular support.
