Liberians were shocked Friday when they heard their President George Weah telling a service of Muslims that he wants to go to the Islamic pilgrimage in mecca.
The Liberian President is the founder of the Forky Jlaleh Family Fellowship Church and has been propagating the message of Christ.
The former soccer player turned President went to the New Georgia Mosque in Monrovia to attend the intercessory service making Liberia’s 175th Independence celebration.
In remarks at the service, George Weah told the Islamic community that one of his lifetime wishes has been to go to Mecca, the Holy city of the Islamic Faith.
The president said since Muslims believe that when one goes to the Holy city of Mecca and touches the Kaaba of the prophet Muhammad one gets lucky, he also wants to get lucky.
In his words (” it is finished”) he too wants to do that.
The Liberian leader’s statement has created debates in the country.
With some asking while would a Christian, especially an evangelist wants to go to Mecca?
Does the President think that Mecca is a playground for Photoshop or merry-making that just anybody can go?
“Hajj pilgrimage is one of the major pillars of Islam. Hajj is, in fact, one of the five central pillars of Islam, upon which the religion is founded. It is an obligation upon every able-bodied and financially capable Muslim, both male and female, to be completed at least once in a lifetime”, said a Liberian Journalist with a Muslim background.
How can the president who claimed to be an evangelist of the gospel of Jesus Christ want to fulfill Islamic obligations?
Let’s not forget though, that Weah once abandoned Christianity for Islam before converting back to Christianity during his soccer playing days.
The Journalist said religious tolerance is not the same as practicing blasphemy. Warning President Weah to stop making a mockery of sacred religions.
“We can coexist and be tolerant of each other; but not play double standard by Sunday, we will see the president playing the Bishop role in the church, and on Friday, he goes to the mosque.
Another Liberian believed the Liberian leader is worshipping God, irrespective of which structure he went in to pray.
Another Liberia said Weah is ChristMus-meaning he’s both Christian and a Muslim; and that by wanting to go Mecca, he is simply trying to fulfill Islamic worship.
