MONROVIA — Calls for greater transparency in Liberia’s ongoing drug-trafficking investigations are intensifying, with Liberian-American advocate Grace Guar urging an independent review of serious allegations involving the Liberia National Police and Inspector General Gregory Coleman.
Guar, founder and Executive Director of Legacy Holding Foundation and President of the Liberian Women Advocacy Network International (LWANI), said in an exclusive interview with Smart News Liberia on Thursday, August 21, 2026, that the allegations surrounding the police investigation must be subjected to a credible and impartial process to protect public confidence in law enforcement.
Her intervention follows allegations raised by activist Martin K. N. Kollie against Inspector General Coleman. Among the claims are questions about the alleged use of secret funds to purchase vehicles and possible conflicts of interest.
Guar said such allegations should not be dismissed or accepted without proper examination.
“If the police have indeed used secret funds to purchase vehicles and if conflicts of interest are involved,” she argued, the credibility of the police and its drug investigations could face serious damage.
She stressed that Coleman and any other individuals implicated in the allegations should be given a fair opportunity to respond, while calling for an independent audit or investigation to establish the facts.
The controversy comes as Liberia’s security authorities face heightened public attention over major cocaine investigations and seizures that have placed the country’s law-enforcement institutions under unprecedented scrutiny.
For Guar, the issue extends beyond the individuals involved and raises a broader question about the standards governing security operations and the use of public resources.
She argued that transparency is essential to restoring and maintaining public confidence in law enforcement, particularly when investigations involve powerful institutions, large sums of money and allegations of organized drug trafficking.
According to Guar, openness in police operations can help deter corruption and abuse of authority while ensuring that officers and senior officials are held accountable for their decisions.
She also warned that continued public and media attention is likely to increase pressure on Liberia’s security leadership to respond convincingly to the allegations rather than allowing questions surrounding the investigation to linger.
Guar believes the controversy could become a defining test of Liberia’s commitment to accountability in the security sector.
An independent investigation, she maintained, would not only help determine whether the allegations have merit but could also demonstrate that no law-enforcement official is beyond scrutiny.
With the cocaine investigations already attracting significant domestic and international attention, Guar’s call places renewed emphasis on the need for credible oversight, due process and institutional accountability.
The outcome, she suggested, could either deepen public skepticism or provide an opportunity for Liberia to strengthen confidence in its fight against drug trafficking.
