CCC works with OMNIA in building community-based Inter-Faith Peacemaker Teams to help address violence in the communities and enable communities to be self-reliant.
Dr. Shanta Premawardhana brings with him a wealth of experience in interreligious dialogue and cooperation. Prior to his current role at OMNIA, he served as the Director for Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. Additionally, he held the position of Associate General Secretary for Interfaith Relations at the National Council of Churches, USA, and served as a pastor at Ellis Avenue Church in Chicago.
During his visit to Liberia, Dr. Shanta Premawardhana will engage with various stakeholders, conduct a comprehensive three-day advanced training program for 19 IP Team leaders in Montserrado, Bomi, and Grand Cape Mount Counties, and deliver a two-day training session for 10 IP Team trainers. Dr. Shanta comes with a message of peace for all Liberians, a community-based strategy for peace-building and training opportunities for volunteers for peace in the communities
OMNIA Institute for Contextual Leadership, founded in 1976, is an esteemed institution that focuses on countering religious extremism and combating religion-based oppression, domination, and violence. With an impressive track record, OMNIA has trained over 4,000 peacemakers worldwide, including 200 in Liberia, who are actively organized into Interfaith Peacemaker Teams.
According to Bishop Kortu K. Brown, who introduced the OMNIA concept in Liberia community peace-building construction, since the inception of the Interfaith Peacemaker Teams program in Liberia just over a year ago, Liberia IP Teams have been making remarkable strides in their communities through various initiatives. These teams have introduced the program to their communities through one-on-one engagements with family, friends, and neighbors. Their unwavering dedication has been instrumental in spreading the message of peace and harmony.
The Concerned Christian Community, one of Liberia’s oldest faith-based relief and peace-building organization and the Inter-faith Peacemaker Teams firmly believe that establishing “Interfaith Peacemaker Teams” in every County, City, and District will significantly contribute to the reduction of violence and enhance the overall peace, security, and stability of our beloved country. We look forward to Dr. Shanta Premawardhana’s visit and the positive impact it will have on the ongoing efforts to build a more harmonious and peaceful Liberia. Press Release
