AMOS C. SAWYER COLLEGE TO HOLD  ACADEMIC DEBATE FOR STUDENTS ON MONDAY

MONROVIA – The Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Liberia is  set to launch its inaugural academic debate  on Monday, 28 April 2025 at 10:30AM in the Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer Faculty Lounge, UL Fendall Campus. The College has embarked on a new academic trajectory and treats research and thesis with prominent.

The debate offers numerous benefits to students including  gaining confidence in their abilities to articulate their views, ideas and engage in constructive dialogue with other students.

The debate is designed to foster critical thinking, enhance students communication skills, and strengthen research among students and faculty. The platform will encourage students  to articulate and defend their views on a range of subject matters aligned with the College’s core values.

The Monday’s debate will be held among students of  Political Science 477 and Political Science  470 sections. The two sections are taught separately by the Deanmof the College, Associate Prof. Dr.  Josephus M. Gray,  and the Chairman.of the Department of Political Science, Assistant Prof. Richmond S.  Anderson.

The focused of Monday’s debate is: “The Teaching of the 1986 Liberian Constitution in Schools: Is it Relevant? The  Chairperson of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Assistant Prof. Michael S. Seator will moderate the debate. While the Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation, Dr. Ibrahim Nyei will launch the debate. The academic session will be bringing together various students leaderships at the ACS College, faculty members and Chairpersons as well as the press and other students.

After the Monday’s debate, the next session  will be held across the various degree granting  departments in the Sawyer College. Each debate will be uniquely tailored and serve to awaken academic engagement among both students and faculty.

“Debate is a powerful educational tool that builds persuasive arguments, sharpens oral presentation, and deepens understanding of complex issues.”

Through this academic debate initiative and other innovations, the College is reinforcing its mission to empower students with practical knowledge and critical skills necessary for success in a globalized world.
