MONROVIA – The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has issued a stern statement welcoming the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the ongoing leadership conflict within the House of Representatives, while condemning what it described as illegal actions by Representative Richard Koon and his self-proclaimed “Majority Bloc.”
In a strongly worded release issued Tuesday, the ANC declared that the ruling by the nation’s highest court “brings much-needed clarity” to what the party calls an unlawful power struggle. The opposition party emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision affirms the principle that no individual or group stands above the law and called for immediate adherence to the ruling.
“The continued defiance and reckless actions” of Rep. Koon and his allies, the ANC warned, “represent not only an attack on the Legislature but a brazen assault on the very foundations of our democracy.”
The party urged the accused legislators to cease what it called “unconstitutional proceedings” and accused them of risking a constitutional crisis that could roll back democratic progress in the country. “The Liberian people deserve leadership rooted in law, not in backroom deals or political arrogance,” the statement read.
The ANC further challenged President Joseph N. Boakai to take concrete action in defense of the rule of law. “The time for silence and inaction is over,” the party stated. “As Head of State and custodian of the Constitution, the President has a solemn duty to ensure that the laws of Liberia, including the judgments of our highest court, are enforced.”
The statement also called on international partners to “condemn any actions that undermine the authority of the judiciary and destabilize our democratic institutions.” According to the ANC, the global community must not stand idle while elected officials attempt to “hijack power and disrespect constitutional order.”
The ANC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to a lawful and democratic Liberia, vowing to stand with the Liberian people and all defenders of democratic integrity.
