BOAKAI HAILS APPOINTMENT OF DR. LAYLI MAPARYAN AS UL PRESIDENT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing education in Liberia, describing the appointment of Dr. Layli Maparyan as President of the University of Liberia (UL) as a significant milestone for the institution.

During a meeting at the Executive Mansion on Thursday, January 9, 2025, President Boakai, in his capacity as Visitor to the University, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Maparyan, emphasizing the critical role her leadership will play in driving transformative growth at Liberia’s premier higher education institution.

“Liberia is not new to you, and we are excited to have you leading this historic institution,” President Boakai said. He expressed confidence that Dr. Maparyan’s tenure would align with the government’s ARREST Agenda, particularly in education and workforce development.

The President commended the UL Board of Trustees for their diligent selection process, noting their unanimous endorsement of Dr. Maparyan as a testament to their commitment to excellence. “The Board’s decision reflects a clear dedication to the University’s future,” he added.

Dr. Maparyan was formally introduced to President Boakai by Board Chairman and Grand Kru County Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa, who voiced optimism about her ability to address the longstanding challenges facing the University. Outgoing UL President Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh also praised the selection process, highlighting its adherence to international standards and its success in identifying a capable leader.

In her remarks, Dr. Maparyan expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged her commitment to advancing the institution. Reflecting on her first visit to Liberia in 2009, she described her new role as a realization of her aspiration to contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s development. “Liberia is no longer just my second home—it is now my first home,” she stated, underscoring her dedication to the University.

Dr. Maparyan is set to be officially inducted as President of the University of Liberia at a special convocation on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Fendall Campus. Normal academic activities are expected to resume on Monday, January 13, 2025.
